Lesley Urbach tells the story of why Helga Lemer, née Kirsch came to England on a domestic visa from Berlin when she was 19 years old, leaving her widowed mother behind. She uses extracts of interviews given by Helga in the 1990s and of letters sent by Helga’s mother, Gertrude illustrating her desperate attempts to get out of Germany.
